Choosing Wisely Canada launched the STARS movement (Students and Trainees Advocating for Resource Stewardship) in 2015 to introduce the issues of overuse of tests, treatments and procedures as well as responsibility in resource management into medical training.
Referents in every medical school in the country were identified.
Similar movements of students and young doctors were later established in the United States, Japan, New Zeland, Netherlands.
In Italy Choosing Wisely movement of students and physicians in training was launched in the workshop with Prof Wendy Levinson, leader of CW Canada and International, that was held in Milan in 2018 on the occasion of the first National Congress of Choosing Wisely Italy.
A network was established, composed of medical students with SISM, physicians in training with Federspecializzandi and the Giotto Movement of young GPs.
The SISM, Italian Secretariat for Students in Medicine APS, has now developed 5 recommendations on procedures at risk of inappropriateness in Medical Training in Italy.
These topics will have to enter the training curricula of medical students and young doctors also in Italy.
