YOUTH CHOOSING WISELY ITALY
Choosing Wisely Canada, one of the most active organizations of Choosing Wisely International, launched in 2015 the movement STARS (Students and Trainees Advocating for Resource Stewardship) to introduce also in medical training the issues of overuse of tests, treatments and procedures and of responsibility in resource management. Referents in every medical school in the country were identified.
A list of procedures at risk of inappropriateness has been defined by the students “Six Things Medical Students and Trainees Should Question” and another list by residents “Five Things Medical Residents and Patients Should Question” .
Similar movements of students and young doctors were later established in the United States, Japan, New Zeland, Netherlands.

Youth Choosing Wisely Italy
A workshop with Wendy Levinson, leader of Choosing Wisely Canada and International, was held in Milan on March 22, 2018 during the I National Congress of Choosing Wisely Italy. On this occasion the movement Choosing Wisely of students and physicians in training was also launched in Italy (presentations by Wendy Levinson and Sandra Vernero).
A network consisting of three different entities was established:
- Medical students, mainly represented by SISM (Italian Secretariat for Medical Students)
- Physicians in training represented by Federspecializzandi and by post graduate students from various universities
- Giotto Movement, a structured movement of young GPs
GOALS
Network’s goals are mainly:
- the dissemination of the key messages and recommendations of Choosing Wisely through meetings and training initiatives;
- definition of the 5 recommendations of its own competence;
- participation of students and physicians in training in the Choosing Wisely International Movement;
- the gradual introduction of the contents of Slow Medicine and Choosing Wisely in the University and post-graduate training curricula through contacts with the top management of the schools.
