However recent studies have demonstrated that routine episiotomy involves several side effects like unpredictable extension of the surgical incision towards anus and rectum, narrowing of the vaginal introit, excessive blood loss, edema, pain, infection, diastasis and dyspareunia.<br \/>\nEpisiotomy may be indicated in the operative vaginal delivery (vacuum extractor or forceps), when it is necessary to accelerate the fetus expulsion in the presence of fetal distress and invasive maneuvers are needed to treat shoulder dystocia.<br \/>\nIn any case median episiotomies must be avoided because they are associated to an increased risk of extension to the rectum.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":4583,"template":"","meta":{"_wpml_word_count":["{\"total\":221,\"to_translate\":{\"it\":221}}"],"_wpv_contains_gutenberg_views":[""],"_layouts_template":["modello-per-raccomandazioni-professionista"],"_wp_page_template":["default"],"_edit_lock":["1590685101:2"],"_edit_last":["2"],"_thumbnail_id":["4583"],"_wpml_media_duplicate":["1"],"_wpml_media_featured":["1"],"_wpml_location_migration_done":["1"],"wpcf-pacchetto":["AOGOI #1"],"wpcf-bibliografia":["1.\tCochrane Library Jiang H, Qian X, Carroli G, Garner P Selective versus routine use of episiotomy for vaginal birth (Review) 2017.\r\n2.\tM.A. Muhleaman et al.
